Community representatives sought for West Lothian Development Trust
Community benefit is a benefit in kind contribution made by a developer to the local area by which their development lies. These payments are voluntary, there is no legal requirement for their provision, therefore the amount paid, and how, varies from one development to another.
Community benefit payments are to be used for charitable works, educational projects/ promotion, environmental improvement (including landscaping) and renewable energy projects including energy conservation.
West Lothian Council's community benefit policy ensures that community benefit payments are distributed to areas within 10 km of the development, 70% within 5km and 30% within 10km. Community benefit payments are distributed via a trust, the West Lothian Development Trust. The trust comprises representatives from West Lothian Council, developers and the local community.
