Nancy Muir was presented with a crystal vase in recognition of her 26 years as a project worker with West Lothian Women's Aid

Nancy's work with women is recognised

A Livingston woman has been recognised for her 26 years work with the Dedridge-based West Lothian Women's Aid.

Colleagues paid tribute as refuge worker Nancy Muir was presented with a crystal vase, to mark her dedication.
Nancy says that the problem of domestic abuse is just as bad as it was when she first started with the group.
But she adds that the help available for victims has improved dramatically.

"Nowadays the police are phoning us and we are getting involved straight away," said Nancy. "Unfortunately, we are busy 365 days a year.

"The only way you can stop it is through education. You have to break the cycle. I am seeing daughters and grand-daughters of women who were here in the early days. We have to get the message across that domestic abuse is not acceptable."

Nancy praised the recent launch of the Women's Aid and Police 'Safer Streets' pilot project, which will offer early intervention and support to women following domestic abuse incidents.

"This will make a huge difference," she added.
