Road Safety
Every year, around 80 people are killed or seriously injured on West Lothian roads and a further 600 are slightly injured. In response, we published our Road Safety Plan in 2006 which sets out how we aim to improve road safety in West Lothian.
The plan is reviewed annually to ensure that it reflects the needs of the community and the available resources. The council is committed to meeting national road casualty reduction targets as follows:
- A 40% reduction in the number of people killed or seriously injured by 2010
- A 50% redcution in the number of children killed or seriously injured by 2010
- A 10% reduction in the slight casualty rate by 2010
The council is working in partnership with Lothian and Borders Police and Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service to deliver a range of initiatives in support of the road safety plan.
The council's road safety work is co-ordinated by the Road Safety and Traffic Management team based within Transportation at County Buildings, Linlithgow. The work of the team includes:
- Developing and maintaining the council?s road safety plan
- Providing general road safety advice
- Undertake accident investigation studies
- Carrying out road safety audits of new road schemes
- Collating and analyising accident statistics
- Arranging and analysing speed surveys
