Broxburn Flood Prevention Scheme

Broxburn has experienced flooding on a number of occasions in recent years, the most recent being in August 2008 when a number of homes and properties were inundated.

In March 2002, the Council commissioned Halcrow Group Ltd, a specialist consultant, to investigate flooding of the Brox Burn and Liggat Syke.

The study identified the areas at risk of flooding and proposed the development of a Flood Prevention Scheme. The areas identified as being at greatest risk are:

  • West Burnside / Station Road
  • Burnside Village
  • Pyothall area / Nicol Road area along the Liggat Syke
  • West Main Street (south side) west of Blyth Road

Current Status

In the aftermath of the event of the 20th August 2008 we carried out an extensive clean up operation of the area and worked together with the local community to help those residents who had been affected by the flooding.

Halcrow Group Ltd, on behalf of West Lothian Council, carried out a post event review to determine the severity and extent of the flooding and to evaluate the robustness of the proposed flood defences.
